First of all I hope all of you and family keep safe and stay as far as possible of COVID19. Regarding your question, doubts, concerns: no panic. We are working for the best of the class trying to detect where problems are and find solutions to improve. Answering your question Lars:
Motivation: In the last 10 years the main improvement in that class has been bodies. Due high downforce of the current bodies, mechanical parts like bearings, clutch, belts.. are suffering a lot, especially in tracks with high traction. I.E in last IFMAR WC 2019 in L.A, only 5 cars could finish the 1 hour main final due mechanical problems and some of them finished but had problems during final. So we are talking about resistance A-main final.
Another weak point in this moment: Engine. With 16% of nitro and special fuels, 3.5cc engines and current foam tires, you can drive a 1/8th IC on road car a full gas more than 70% in most of the tracks which caused a lot of stress on the engine. For professional driver, doesn’t matter if they spend 7-8 engines in a week race. But nonprofessional drivers paid the bill. If you want to get a chance to get a successful Euro/WC you have to get 4-5 good engines ready to be burned (if you have good skills for tunning).
Last but not least, we realized that the bodyshell designs were becoming more and more extreme, if we cannot put limits in a couple of years 1/8th bodies will look like slot cars.
Who is pushing: After a lot of talks with drivers, manufacturers… IFMAR and EFRA got a conclusion that best way could be to reduce downforce of the current bodies.
Goals: Reduce downforce, to reduce stress on the mechanical parts of the car, reduce stress on the engines and to create a GBS to regulate limits in 1/8th IC future designs creating more realistic bodies.
Benefits: mainly for hobby drivers, keeping durability of the mechanical parts of the car and engines. Benefit for manufactures, creating a good set of rules for their designs and, in a minor way but also important for the future, benefits for fans not related with RC, creating as much realistic bodies possible to be attractive for TV coverages.
Once again, not panic. We are working hard with real professionals in that area and with deputed manufacturers. Changes won’t be insane. Changes will be according to the needs we have, and thinking in mid-long term.
